Beyond by Kit Rocha: nine novels outside the city walls

The apocalypse does not cancel the romance. It gives everyone more to argue about.

The short answer

Read Kit Rocha's nine Beyond novels in order: Beyond Shame, Beyond Control, Beyond Pain, Beyond Jealousy, Beyond Addiction, Beyond Innocence, Beyond Ruin, Beyond Ecstasy and Beyond Surrender. The authors advise saving Beyond Forever until after Beyond Surrender because its framing scenes contain spoilers.

The novels, without the side roads

Main sequence. Add Beyond Temptation after 3, Beyond Solitude after 4 and Beyond Possession after 5 if wanted.

The rich live inside Eden. Everybody else has to make a life outside its walls. Kit Rocha's Beyond puts erotic romance in the middle of that unequal world, which makes it a useful answer when you want a plot alongside the heat.

The publisher is not asking you to imagine a slightly more dramatic office romance here. The official series description names a post-apocalyptic setting, gangs and the O'Kanes of Sector Four. Choose it because that world interests you, not just because somebody attached a high spice rating.

Nine main novels make a manageable first pass

The authors say you can follow the novels without reading every extra story. The full timeline is available on their site if you want the novellas as well. Beyond Temptation follows book three, Beyond Solitude follows book four, and Beyond Possession follows book five.

There is one especially useful exception to chronological order: Beyond Forever. Its framing scenes spoil the main series, so the authors recommend reading it after Beyond Surrender. Earlier in the fictional timeline does not necessarily mean earlier on your list.

Keep the nine novels in sequence. Save the side stories for the gaps you want to revisit.

Ask which relationships you want to follow

The official tags include found family and relationships that do not all fit a single monogamous pairing. If you are browsing for a particular configuration, check the individual novel. Our relationship-dynamics guide separates that question from sexual explicitness.

  • The setting. Expect an oppressive city and life in the sectors around it. The background conflict is part of the recommendation.
  • The cast. Returning characters reward reading in sequence even when the central relationship changes.
  • The tone. A violent fictional world and consensual relationships are separate questions. Read the specific content notes rather than making one assumption cover both.

You can stop collecting the universe for a minute

Gideon's Riders and Mercenary Librarians share the wider setting. The authors say they can be read independently. You do not need to put every related series into your cart before finding out whether Beyond Shame works for you.

I would start with its sample and ask a plain question: do you want to spend more time in Sector Four? If the answer is yes, the order is already laid out. If you mostly wanted a familiar contemporary setting, Beautiful is a different, more relevant starting point.

Questions before you start

How many main Beyond novels are there?
The authors list nine novels, with additional novellas and stories separate from that count.
Should Beyond Forever come first?
The authors recommend reading it after Beyond Surrender because the framing scenes contain major spoilers.
Do I need Mercenary Librarians before Beyond?
No. The authors describe Mercenary Librarians as independently readable despite the shared world.
