Erotic romance with a plot: what should happen between the scenes?

You finish a scene and realize nothing has changed. Nobody learned anything, the argument is still waiting in the hall, and the next chapter could have happened fifty pages ago. That is the complaint behind a lot of requests for 'spice with a plot'.

A r/RomanceBooks discussion asks whether good explicit writing and a satisfying plot can coexist. A r/booksuggestions request asks for characters worth following. Those are selection criteria, not a demand that every romance become a thriller.

A relationship can supply the plot

A scene can move a story by changing trust, exposing a fear or making a decision harder. You do not need an explosion outside the window to call that development. But if you specifically want an investigation or a wider conflict, say so. A beautifully observed courtship might still miss that request.

I would separate three things: events outside the relationship, change inside it, and the amount of repetition you enjoy. A book can have plenty of events and still feel stalled if the central argument never moves.

Three different answers to more story

Give the recommendation a small test

Read a sample and look for a problem you want to see resolved. It might be attraction at work, a character's conflicting loyalties or the world outside the couple. If you cannot name anything that interests you after the sample, a stranger's five-star enthusiasm has not solved that.
