Jeff Hays, Travis Baldree, Heath Miller: the voices half the fandom knows better than the prose. The series worth your credits, and where each one is cheapest to hear.

Over 140 million hours. That is how long people had spent listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl on Audible by the summer of 2026, and a respectable slice of it came from my commute. I have read the ebooks. I still think of Carl as something I heard.

LitRPG is the one genre where the audiobook is half the fandom. The stat screens that scare people off on the page become a bit when a narrator reads them with a straight face, and this genre has narrators whose names fans use the way other fandoms use the author's. Some of the big series ship audio the same day as the Kindle edition. Others run months behind. Either way, three studios keep showing up in the credits: Soundbooth Theater, Podium Audio and Aethon Audio.

The series worth your credits

Every entry below has the narrator who is on the recording, the audio publisher, how many audiobooks exist as of October 2026, and a real running time, because "long" means nothing in a genre where 25 hours is a normal book. Where I could not confirm a detail, I left it out. Four of these sit on our curated shelf; the rest are there in spirit.

  • Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. Jeff Hays, published by Soundbooth Theater, exclusive to Audible. Eight audiobooks as of October 2026, the newest, A Parade of Horribles, out May 12, 2026. Book 1 runs 13 hours 31 minutes; book 7 is the long one at 28 hours 40 minutes. Hays voices nearly every character himself, Princess Donut included, and Dinniman still gets asked why the female narrator is not credited. There is no female narrator. Guest voices show up on three books, with Travis Baldree on 6 and 7 and Patrick Warburton on 6. For: anyone, including people who swear they cannot do audiobooks.
  • He Who Fights with Monsters by Shirtaloon. Heath Miller, solo on all thirteen, from Podium Audio. Book 13 arrived on Audible October 6, 2026, the same day as the Kindle edition. Book 1 is 28 hours 56 minutes and book 13 is 22 hours 21 minutes. Audible's editors put it in their Best of the Year for 2021. For: listeners who want one voice to live with for a very long time. Jason's running commentary is the series, and Miller plays it straight, which is the only way it works. Books in order here.
  • The Primal Hunter by Zogarth. Travis Baldree, solo, from Aethon Audio. Fifteen audiobooks as of October 2026. Book 15 came out August 19, 2026, and book 16, on Kindle since July 29, has no audiobook listed yet: the audio here trails the ebook by four to five months, so listeners live one book behind. Book 1 runs 20 hours 9 minutes. For: numbers-go-up purists who want every stat screen read with total conviction. Baldree supplies it. Books in order here.
  • Defiance of the Fall by TheFirstDefier. Pavi Proczko, solo on all seventeen, from Aethon Audio. Book 17 landed September 16, 2026, same day as the Kindle. Every volume runs 20 to 26 hours; book 1 is 23 hours 29 minutes. Seventeen books and one narrator the whole way, which matters more than it sounds once a series has switched voices on you. For: system-apocalypse fans who want the deepest catalog on this list that is still growing.
  • Chrysalis by RinoZ. Jeff Hays with Annie Ellicott, both credited on every book, produced by Soundbooth Theater and published by Aethon Audio. Seven audiobooks as of October 2026, plus a box set of books 1 to 3. Book 7, Fated Antagonist, came out October 14, 2025; books 8 and 9 are on Kindle with no audiobook listed yet. Book 1 is 17 hours 18 minutes. For: anyone who wants to hear Hays play an ant with middle-management energy, and who can stand being two books behind the readers. Reading order here.
  • Unbound by Nicoli Gonnella. Travis Baldree, solo on all twelve, from Mountaindale Press. Finished: Ruin, the last book, hit audio June 24, 2026, and runs 34 hours 46 minutes. Book 1, Dissonance, is 26 hours 44 minutes. For: listeners who want a complete story with no release dates to wait on. It is darker than anything else here. Full order here.
  • The Wandering Inn by pirateaba. Andrea Parsneau on books 1 to 15, then Erin Bennett from book 16 (King of Duels, July 2025) onward, from Podium Audio. Nineteen audiobooks as of October 2026, with book 20, Memory's Flame, on pre-order for November 3, 2026, at 43 hours 55 minutes. Book 1 is 48 hours 7 minutes, the longest opener on this list, and the current recording is a rewritten, re-recorded edition that folds parts 1 and 2 together. The game stats are light; call it LitRPG-lite and cozy. For: people who measure a series in seasons, not weeks.
  • Cradle by Will Wight. Progression fantasy, LitRPG-adjacent: no stat screens anywhere, so not LitRPG by my own definition. It earns a spot because Travis Baldree narrated all twelve and the series is complete. Unsouled runs 8 hours 52 minutes, the shortest book on this page by a mile; Waybound, the finale, is 16 hours 13 minutes, and a side volume, Threshold, followed in January 2025. Published by Hidden Gnome, Wight's own imprint. For: a first audiobook series, or a palate cleanser between forty-hour bricks.

Two names keep coming up, so here is who they are. Jeff Hays founded Soundbooth Theater and still runs it. He has hundreds of audiobooks to his name, and he will voice Princess Donut in Peacock's live-action Dungeon Crawler Carl series. The cat on television will sound exactly like the cat in your headphones.

Travis Baldree narrated The Primal Hunter, Unbound, Cradle, Mark of the Fool and Beware of Chicken, and guest-voiced on Dungeon Crawler Carl 6 and 7. In 2025 he won the Audie for Fantasy for Bookshops & Bonedust, a book he also wrote. Before any of that he co-founded Runic Games and made Torchlight. The man reading your stat screens built the loot tables first.

On the page, a stat screen is homework. In Jeff Hays's mouth, it is a bit.

The catch with listening is the calendar. He Who Fights with Monsters 13 and Defiance of the Fall 17 hit Audible the same day as their ebooks. The Primal Hunter trails its ebook by months, and book 16 has no audiobook listed as of today. Chrysalis is two books behind. Audio dates and Kindle dates are two separate calendars. I follow the Kindle one, and I built the thing that follows it for me.

Follow a series once and we check it every day. When the next book or pre-order is listed, you get an email, and in this genre that is your cue to start checking for the audiobook.

Where each one is cheapest to listen

First, the thing that rotates. Audible's Plus Catalog is the unlimited library that comes with Premium, and as of October 6, 2026, it holds book 1 of He Who Fights with Monsters and book 1 of The Wandering Inn. That is 77 hours without spending a credit. Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, Chrysalis, Unbound and Cradle are not in it. Titles move in and out of Plus, so check the badge on the book's page the week you sign up, not the week I wrote this.

Second, Kindle Unlimited. Every book 1 on this list is in KU in the US store as of October 2026, Carl included, and none of them come with narration. KU does include the audiobook on titles that carry the headset icon; these are not those titles. What the Kindle page offers instead is Add Narration, a discounted audiobook for people who own the ebook. The feature was called Whispersync for Voice and is now Read & Listen. On book 1 of Carl, Monsters, Primal Hunter, Defiance, Chrysalis and Unbound the add-on is $4.93; on Unsouled it is $5.18; the new Wandering Inn edition shows no add-on at all. Whether a KU borrow qualifies for that price I could not confirm, so read the buy box before you count on it. The KU versus Audible math is here, and the KU picks are here.

Third, the subscription itself. Take a thirteen-book habit, which is He Who Fights with Monsters today, and run it three ways:

  • Audible Standard, $8.99 a month as of October 2026. One audiobook a month from the full catalog, chosen without credits. Picks do not roll over. Thirteen months of Monsters comes to about $117. The catch: your picks lock the day you cancel, and come back if you rejoin. It is a rental, and for one series at a time it is a cheap one.
  • Audible Premium (formerly Premium Plus), $14.95 a month. One credit a month that you keep forever, plus the Plus Catalog. Thirteen credits at the monthly rate is about $194. The annual plans change the math: 12 credits for $149.50, or 24 for $229.50, which is under $10 a book, and every credit is available on day one, so you binge instead of waiting for the first of the month. Credits expire 12 months after they are issued, or the day you cancel.
  • Buy the Kindle book, add the narration. Book 1 of Monsters is $4.99 to buy and $4.93 to add the audiobook, as of October 2026. Under ten dollars for 29 hours, and you keep it with no subscription attached. Later volumes carry their own prices. For the collector with two or three series and no appetite for a monthly bill.

Trials, for the record. Standard is 30 days free if you have not been an Audible member in the past 12 months. Premium is 30 days free for new customers, and Prime members get their first Premium trial with two credits instead of one. Amazon also runs Audible promotions around its deal seasons. In 2026 that meant three months of Standard free plus a $20 credit around Prime Day in June. In October it was $0.99 a month for the first three or four months, plus the same $20 credit, for Prime members, ending October 7. If a deal season is a few weeks out and you have never subscribed, wait. The plans, side by side, are here.

Standard fits the way most people on this page listen: one series straight through, one book a month. If you want to own the books afterward, pick Premium instead.

Try Audible Standard free for 30 days

Free for 30 days if you have not been an Audible member in the past 12 months, then $8.99 a month as of October 2026. It renews every month unless you cancel, which you can do any time from your Audible account. Monthly picks stay in your library only while the membership is active. Full cast, Immersion, and what is new this week

One correction I make a lot. The Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks on Audible are not full-cast productions, whatever the forum thread said. They are Jeff Hays doing nearly everyone, with guest voices on three of the eight books. What Soundbooth sells separately, on its own site and app, is Dungeon Crawler Carl Immersion. Three seasons are listed as of October 2026, the first from September 2023, and the episodes are credited to Hays as well. A different recording at a different price, with the same man at the center of it.

The newest things, as of October 6, 2026. He Who Fights with Monsters 13 came out in audio that day. The Wandering Inn 20, Memory's Flame, is on pre-order for November 3, 2026, at 43 hours 55 minutes, which is a commute through to spring. The Primal Hunter 16 and Chrysalis 8 and 9 have no audiobook listed yet; the release calendar keeps score. And the cat is going to television: Hays will voice Princess Donut in Peacock's live-action Dungeon Crawler Carl, so the voice in the show is the voice in your car. Of course it is. Who else would they get.

Questions people actually ask

Who narrates Dungeon Crawler Carl?
Jeff Hays, on all eight audiobooks, published by Soundbooth Theater and exclusive to Audible. He voices nearly every character himself, Princess Donut included. Guest voices appear on three books: The Critical Drinker on book 3, Patrick Warburton, Travis Baldree and Annie Ellicott on book 6, and Baldree again on book 7.
Is the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobook full cast?
No. The Audible editions credit Jeff Hays, with guest voices on three of the eight books. Soundbooth Theater separately sells Dungeon Crawler Carl Immersion episodes on its own site and app, a different production that is also credited to Hays.
Are the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited?
No. All eight Kindle books are in Kindle Unlimited in the US store as of October 2026, but the audiobooks are not included. Book 1's Kindle page offers the audiobook as a $4.93 add-on, or you buy it on Audible with a credit or cash.
Which LitRPG audiobook should I start with?
Dungeon Crawler Carl book 1 if you want the shortest on-ramp among the pure LitRPG picks: 13 hours 31 minutes and the genre's most famous performance. He Who Fights with Monsters book 1 if you already have Audible Premium, because as of October 2026 it is in the Plus Catalog and costs no credit.
Which LitRPG series does Travis Baldree narrate?
The Primal Hunter (15 audiobooks as of October 2026) and Unbound (12, complete), plus the progression-fantasy series Cradle (12 plus Threshold), Mark of the Fool (10) and Beware of Chicken (5). He also guest-voices on Dungeon Crawler Carl books 6 and 7.
Is Audible Standard or Premium better for LitRPG?
Standard ($8.99 a month as of October 2026) gives you one audiobook a month that you keep only while subscribed, which suits listening to one series straight through. Premium ($14.95 a month) gives you a credit a month that you keep forever plus the Plus Catalog, and the annual plans bring the per-credit price under $10 at 24 credits for $229.50. Keepers pick Premium annual; everyone else is fine on Standard.
