- Buying those books
- $11.98
- Kindle Unlimited
- $11.99
It's a close call: about $0.01 a month either way.
It pays for itself at 4 books a month.
What the number can't tell you
- You can borrow up to 20 titles at a time, and magazine issues count toward that limit.
- When you cancel, borrowed books go back. You keep nothing.
- Books join Kindle Unlimited through KDP Select, which requires the ebook to be exclusive to Amazon. That is why many big-publisher bestsellers are not in it.
- If you have Prime, Prime Reading already includes a rotating selection of Kindle Unlimited titles. Try that first.
- Your public library may lend ebooks for free.
Worth it if you binge long indie series and most of what you read carries the Kindle Unlimited badge. Not worth it if you mostly read new big-publisher releases, or a book or two a month.
Worth starting when you have a queue of Kindle Unlimited books ready. Set a reminder before day 30.

- How is this calculated?
- Books a month × the share of them in Kindle Unlimited × what you'd pay per ebook, compared with the monthly fee. Books outside Kindle Unlimited cost the same whether you subscribe or not, so they are left out.
- Does it count the free trial?
- No. It compares a normal paid month. The trial makes the first month free if you have never tried Kindle Unlimited.
- Why is my price different?
- Amazon sets the price per country and changes it from time to time; offers and annual plans also vary. Type the price you see on your Amazon account and the result updates.
