He Who Fights with Monsters is the series I recommend when someone says "I want something long." Not long like a trilogy with big books. Long like a second mortgage. Twelve volumes are out, each one a brick, and the story is still accelerating. If it hooks you, and it hooks most people somewhere in book one's first market scene, you are set for months.

The premise: Jason Asano, an ordinary Australian with an extraordinary mouth, wakes up in a strange world mid monster ritual, no explanation provided. The world runs on essences, magical building blocks that grant powers, and ranks that everyone climbs from iron toward diamond and beyond. Jason picks up a set of frankly sinister powers, cloaks, shadow arms, afflictions, the works, and then insists on using them like a hero. The friction between what his powers look like and who he wants to be drives a dozen books of fights, banter, and the occasional argument with a god.

Shirtaloon, the pen name of Travis Deverell, started the story as a web serial, and the momentum of that format survives in the books: chapters move, jokes land at a conversational rhythm, and there is always one more fight, one more rank, one more reason to stay up too late.

Every He Who Fights with Monsters book in order

Blessedly, the series is numbered. No companion charts, no publication-versus-chronology debates. The books are titled He Who Fights with Monsters 1 through 12, published from 2021 onward, and you read them in numerical order:

  • Books 1 through 3: Jason arrives, finds his feet, and assembles the found family. The tone locks in around here: adventure with a running commentary track.
  • Books 4 through 6: the world widens fast, and one particular late-arc turn reshuffles the entire series. No spoilers. You will know it when it flattens you.
  • Books 7 through 9: higher ranks, higher politics, and the gods stop being background decoration.
  • Books 10 through 12: the cosmic gloves come off. Book 12 is out now, and it moves pieces you did not know were on the board.

Book 13: October 6, 2026

He Who Fights with Monsters 13 releases October 6, 2026, and the Kindle pre-order is already live. If history repeats, the audiobook will follow close behind, and the subreddit will become a spoiler minefield within roughly forty-eight hours of launch. Plan your calendar accordingly. I am not joking. People take leave.

Track He Who Fights with Monsters and get an alert when book 13 drops, plus every future volume after it. There will be many.

Things I wish someone had told me at book one

  • Jason is a lot, on purpose. The character's mouth is the engine of the series. If he grates in early chapters, know that the story is aware, and other characters call it out constantly. It becomes the point.
  • Trust the side characters. Humphrey, Sophie, Belinda, Clive and company grow from party members into co-leads. Series veterans argue about favorites the way other fandoms argue about ships.
  • The series has lived in Kindle Unlimited. It has long been one of the biggest draws in the program; my KU guide covers what a subscription gets you right now.
  • It pairs weirdly well with Dungeon Crawler Carl. Half the genre's fans hold both as their top two, which is why searches for one keep suggesting the other. Carl's reading order is here.
Twelve books in, the rank-ups still hit. That is the whole magic trick, and nobody does it better.

If you are brand new to stat screens and ranks as a storytelling device, my LitRPG field guide explains the furniture. And when you are caught up and pacing the floor waiting for October, the new releases guide has your between-books itinerary.
