Dungeon Crawler Carl books in order (and where book 9 stands)
Eight books out, one to go. The full reading order, what we know about The Beautiful Place, and how to hear the second it gets a date.
Dungeon Crawler Carl is the series I hand to people who tell me they do not read "that kind of book." A month later they are back, changed, asking if the cat gets a bigger role. (She does. She would like you to know she was always the main character.)
The premise, for the three of you who have not been cornered by a fan yet: aliens dissolve every building on Earth, and the survivors can either fade away quietly or enter the World Dungeon, an eighteen-floor death gauntlet that is also the galaxy's highest-rated reality show. Carl enters in boxer shorts and a leather jacket, accompanied by his ex's prize-winning cat, Princess Donut, who gains sapience, a crown, and opinions. What starts as splatter comedy becomes, gradually and sneakily, one of the angriest and most heartfelt stories in modern science fiction.
The good news about reading order: there is no trick to it. Matt Dinniman numbered the books and meant it. Read them like this:
Every Dungeon Crawler Carl book in order
- 1. Dungeon Crawler Carl (2020). Boxers. Cat. Apocalypse. Begin.
- 2. Carl's Doomsday Scenario (2020). The show finds its villains, and its sponsors.
- 3. The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook (2021). The subway floor. If you know, you know.
- 4. The Gate of the Feral Gods (2021). Castles, bubbles, and one of the best endings in the series.
- 5. The Butcher's Masquerade (2022). The hunting ground floor. The body count is personal now.
- 6. The Eye of the Bedlam Bride (2023). Faction wars and a cast you would now take a bullet for.
- 7. This Inevitable Ruin (2025). The war floor. Widely considered the series' high-water mark so far.
- 8. A Parade of Horribles (May 2026). The newest one. The endgame board is set.
There are also side works and shorts in the same universe, and the audiobooks fold in bonus material, but the numbered novels are the spine. If you only follow the list above, you are current.
Book 9: The Beautiful Place
Book 9 is the planned finale, titled The Beautiful Place, and as of mid 2026 Matt Dinniman is writing it, posting early chapters for Patreon supporters as he goes. There is no official release date. Given the size these books have grown to, and the fact that the story may be split across two physical volumes, most fans are guessing at late 2027 or beyond for the ebook.
Do not take unofficial dates you see floating around retailer placeholder pages as gospel. Placeholder dates move. This is exactly the kind of listing churn that burns readers who rely on checking Amazon once in a while.
Add Dungeon Crawler Carl to your watchlist and you will get an alert the moment book 9 gets a real listing. No refreshing required.
Track this seriesA few practical notes before you start
- The audiobooks are a phenomenon. Jeff Hays of Soundbooth Theater performs them like a full-cast radio drama. A huge share of the fandom considers audio the definitive format.
- The series left Kindle Unlimited when it moved to traditional publishing with Ace. If you are hunting for KU reads instead, this guide has you covered.
- It gets heavier as it goes. The jokes never stop, but the series grows real teeth about grief, exploitation, and entertainment built on suffering. That evolution is the point, and it is why the series converts skeptics.
- New to the genre? Here is what LitRPG means if the words "stat screen" made you nervous. Carl handles the tutorial.
It starts as a joke about a man in boxer shorts. It ends with you emotionally compromised about a cat.
When you finish the eight that exist and need something to fill the void, I wrote a whole guide of books like Dungeon Crawler Carl. The void is fillable. Mostly.
