Chrysalis books in order, or: the ant series that broke me

I need you to get past the premise, because the premise is where everyone stalls. Chrysalis is about a man who dies and reincarnates in a monster-filled dungeon as an ant. A regular ant. The kind you have personally stepped on. When I tell people this is one of my favorite ongoing series, they make a face, and I understand the face, because I made it too. Then I read the first book in two sittings.

Here is what the premise actually buys you. Anthony, our ant, starts at the absolute bottom of the food chain, which makes every single step of progression feel enormous. And because he is an ant, his instinct is not to become a lone apex predator. It is to build. He recruits, organizes, teaches, and evolves his colony from a hole in the ground into a civilization with infrastructure, specialists, and strong opinions about efficiency. It is a progression fantasy where the thing progressing is a whole society, and it is weirdly, deeply satisfying.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, it is funny. Anthony narrates his own evolution with the energy of a middle manager who cannot believe upper management (the Dungeon) keeps doing this to him. The colony's younger ants worship him in a way he finds professionally embarrassing. There is a lot of heart in this bug book. RinoZ, the author, started the story as a web serial on Royal Road, and its chapter-by-chapter charm survived the trip to Kindle intact.

The books are numbered, and every subtitle is an ant pun. I want to shake the hand of whoever is still generating these nine books in:

Read them in that order. The colony's growth is the plot, so skipping around would be like watching a city-builder timelapse out of sequence.

Who this series is for

• Base-builder brains. If you have ever lost an evening to a colony sim or a city builder, this is that feeling in book form.
• Monster-evolution fans. Anthony's upgrade paths, mutations, and evolution choices are the crunchy heart of the system.
• Readers tired of lone-wolf protagonists. The colony is the co-star. Found family, except the family is thousands of ants and they all love their Eldest sibling very much.
